Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach has been a center for Japanese arts and culture since 1977, helping guests discover South Florida’s heritage and its connection with Japan. This fall, it starts a new tradition with “Lantern Festival: In the Spirit of Obon.”
Held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 18, the event features Japanese folk dancing, drumming, ghost stories and an Ennichi street fair.
The highlight of the evening transforms Morikami Pond into a sea of lanterns which, in accordance with Japanese custom, guide the departure of ancestors’ souls who have come for a brief visit among the living. A fireworks display caps off the night.
Tickets must be purchased ahead on the museum’s website.
